CANOLA
PRODUKSIEHANDLEIDING
PRODUCTION GUIDE
vi
VOORWOORD 2
Gedurende
bemarking. Hierbenewens het die PNS met
die Universiteit van Stellenbosch ooreenge-
kom dat Prof Andrè Agenbag, benewens sy
normale verpligtinge by die Universiteit, ook
as koördineerder mag optree ten opsigte van
die PNS se canola-aksies. Prof Agenbag is
dienooreenkomstig aangestel op die PNS se
Tegnologiekomitee terwyl Mnr Andries Theron,
is. Hulle word verder ondersteun deur kundiges
wat deurlopend as ad hoc kontrakteurs optree.
canolabedryf.
PREFACE 2
We are proud to present this revised edition
of the canola guide seven years after the first
one was published. In the past seven years,
various changes and developments have
taken place in the canola industry, which have
made canola a cash crop in its own right.
Amongst others, the board of the Protein
Research Foundation (PRF) has decided to
make available several millions of rands as
of 2010 for the purpose of research and
technology transfer, with a particular focus
on generic marketing. In addition, the PRF
has reached an agreement with Stellenbosch
University that Prof André Agenbag, apart
from his regular duties at the University, may
also serve as coordinator of the Foudation’s
canola activities. Prof Agenbag was accord-
ingly appointed to the PRF’s Technology
Committee, while Mr Andries Theron, a canola
producer and a familiar face in agricultural
circles, was appointed to the PRF board. They
are supported by experts who serve as ad
hoc contractors on a continuous basis. These
important changes have made a noticeable
difference and have provided a much-needed
boost for the canola industry to enter the next
phase of development.
Continued research and liaison with foreign
institutions and experts has lent greater depth
to local canola expertise, but has also identified
certain gaps in the first edition of the canola
guide, which has led to this revised version.
A new chapter on the economy of canola has
been added, while the chapter on harvesting
canola has been rewritten to include the latest
information on techniques to reduce harvest
losses, which certainly count among the
biggest challenges faced in the canola industry.
